What is RYLA?
RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. It is an International Rotary-supported programme that helps young people develop confidence, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership skills.
How old do I need to be?
RYLA is for young people aged 16 and 17 who live or attend school in the Rotary Wessex district. We look for individuals ready to step outside their comfort zone and develop their potential.
How much does it cost?
The program is fully sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. This covers all food, accommodation, and activities throughout the residential weekend. You only need to arrange your own transport to the venue.
Do I need leadership experience?
No. RYLA is designed to help you discover and develop your leadership skills. You don't need to have been a team captain, prefect or held another leadership position. Indeed, our prime objective is to offer the skills taught on the course to those who have had little opportunities elsewhere.
What if I'm nervous about attending?
Many participants arrive without knowing anybody else. Working together during the weekend means you'll quickly get to know the other people in your team.
Building confidence is one of the main reasons to attend RYLA. You will be encouraged and supported throughout the weekend.
Is there a selection process?
Yes, local Rotary Clubs usually conduct short interviews to select candidates. They look for enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and leadership potential rather than just academic achievement.
What should I bring?
Once selected, you'll receive a detailed kit list. Generally, you'll need comfortable outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear, and personal items for a residential stay.
Is RYLA safe and supervised?
Absolutely. The safety of all participants is our top priority. The program is led by qualified staff and supported by Rotary volunteers, all of whom undergo rigorous safeguarding checks.
What will I gain from RYLA?
Participants gain lifelong skills in leadership, problem-solving, and communication. It's a great booster for CVs and university applications, and most importantly, an incredible experience where you’ll make new friends.
